What is chronic bronchitis?
Chronic bronchitis is chronic airway inflammation from a variety of irritants such as smoke, dust, chemicals, infections, and allergens. This results in narrow edematous airways and excessive mucus production.

What are the symptoms of chronic bronchitis?

  • Cough with large volumes of thick, gummy, slimy mucus
  • Wheezing
  • Trouble breathing

What are the consequences of chronic bronchitis?
If left untreated or ignored, it can lead to:

  • Chronic respiratory failure
  • Recurred pneumonias
  • Heart failure with edema
  • Lose oxygen

Heed the warning signs!

  • Increased cough
  • Thick, dark or bloody sputum
  • Increased trouble breathing
  • Blue fingers
  • Edema

What is the therapy for chronic bronchitis?

  • Broncodilator medications
  • Steroids
  • Techniques to promote cough and airways clearance
  • Oxygen if needed
  • Antibiotics during acute infections

Remember these key points:

  • Chronic bronchitis is NOT just a bad cold or cough
  • Chronic bronchitis will get much worse if you continue to smoke, even if you take your medicine. Do not try to argue about this one! You have to stop smoking!
  • Chronic bronchitis is a chronic condition that needs chronic treatment.
